Beyond the Twinset
Since the 1920's, the twinset has been a staple in women's wardrobes. When you search Wikipedia (I know, a real reliable source) for twinset, it is stated: "The classic twinset is knitted in wool or cashmere, though modern interpretations can be knit from synthetics such as acrylic. The under-sweater is usually worn tight-fitting, with the cardigan unbuttoned to reveal accompanying jewelry, most typically a string of pearls."
The conception of the twinset has been acknowledged as Coco Chanel's creation. Chanel was known for not only tweed & two-tone shoes, but she had a love for pearls. "A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls." Images of this belief are prevalent in her creations throughout her lifetime & has continued through the evolution of the fashion house since her passing in 1971.
Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe embraced the twinset and made it the fashion trend to wear when trying to reflect a more conservative look. This has been a go to when hosting parties in the 50-60's, and then in the 80-90's, I remember it always being the go-to apparel when meeting the parents, specifically the mother, of your boyfriend. It is classic & worn with pearls, it gives a polished, respectable look while also saying "I've got this." Television shows have even fed into the idea that you are to wear a twinset, also can be known as a sweater set, when meeting the family of a boyfriend. I have recently been re-watching Grey's Anatomy over the holidays, and Bailey suggested that Meredith wear a sweater set to impress Derek Shepard's family.
Twinsets aren't really sold the way that they were when I was younger. I remember going to department stores and seeing the sets hanging together for an easy, clean, put together look that didn't take too much thought by the person purchasing. Today, stores like Target, will sell a cardigan & tank in the same color scheme, but not in the same sweater combo like I remember in the 90's, where it gives you the flexibility to coordinate or match. For me, cardigans are carried or worn throughout the year because it is always cold inside restaurants and stores in the spring, summer, and fall in the south when it is 100 degrees outside.
Though the twinsets of the 90's, and prior, are no longer the go-to, there are some girls that can still locate & wear when meeting the mother. This was the inspiration for the website; what is the modern way to be a lady in the south? Whether it be in what you wear, how you act, or full on etiquette. Can't wait to take this journey with all of you!
